Do you find yourself voting on issues in defense against the crazies?
Q. Are you afraid they might actually win? What I'm mean is that, I've largely felt that votes mean little and the choices are often all poor, so I wasn't too involved in the democratic process. However, then the crazy right wingers started pushing for denying some people rights and other unconstitutional and undemocratic ideas. I started voting because I felt I had to defend my rights, the rights of others, and just to keep crazy laws out of my country. Has the increase in vocal crazies who seem to have a lot of support led you to be more involved in the democratic process because you feel you basically have to represent the voice of reason? I'm asking this in R&S because my experience was largely motivated by religious political… [cont.]

A. I've voted in every presidential election since I was able to vote, but actually what got me more involved was the Iraq War. I volunteered for Howard Dean. I guess it's partially related -- I was voting against the war crazies, who are affiliated with the religious crazies.
